Created toward the end of Huygens’s long career, the portrait entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings as part of its Dutch Golden Age collection. Documentation traces its acquisition to the museum’s early 20th‑century purchases of Netscher’s works, confirming its continuous public display since then.

The painting reflects the 17th‑century Dutch tradition of individual portraiture that combined realism with a modest, almost austere setting.
