About this work

Overview

Three Peasants in Conversation is an engraving on laid paper created by Albrecht Dürer around 1497.

Subject & Meaning

The print depicts three men in worn clothing, standing together in conversation. One figure has his back turned, while the other two face each other, one holding a rolled cloth and the other a tool or weapon. The men's weathered attire and lined faces suggest a rustic or laboring context.

Technique & Style

Dürer achieved depth and texture in the scene through the use of fine, crisscrossed lines, a characteristic of the engraving technique. By carving these lines into a metal plate, he was able to create a detailed, black-and-white image.
