About this work

Overview

Created in 1931, this modest composition by Micaela Eleutheriade presents a quiet tabletop arrangement. A shallow bowl holds two apples—one whole, the other halved to expose its interior—while a knife rests nearby, its blade angled toward a loosely draped towel that hangs over the edge of the surface.

Subject & Meaning

The work juxtaposes everyday objects—a fruit bowl, a kitchen utensil, a cloth—to explore ordinary domestic space. By exposing the apple’s interior, Eleutheriade hints at the fleeting nature of nourishment and the hidden structures beneath familiar surfaces, inviting contemplation of the ordinary as a site of subtle revelation.

Technique & Style

Rendered with swift, gestural lines, the drawing emphasizes overall form over fine detail. The apples acquire a sense of volume through suggestive shading, while the towel’s folds are indicated by a few loose strokes, conveying texture without exhaustive rendering. This economy of line reflects a focus on immediacy and observation.

History & Provenance

The piece originates from Eleutheriade’s early career, dating to the early 1930s, a period when she was developing a personal visual language. It remains documented as part of her oeuvre of still-life studies, though its exhibition history and ownership trail are not extensively recorded.
