About this work

Overview

Francesco Granacci, a Florentine painter active at the turn of the 16th century, completed the oil painting *Madonna Enthroned with the Blessing Child, John the Baptist and St. Michael the Archangel* in 1499. The work is part of the Gemäldegalerie Berlin’s collection and exemplifies the religious compositions typical of late‑15th‑century Florence.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure is the Virgin seated on a throne, cradling the infant Christ. To her right, a youthful John the Baptist receives a benediction, while to her left the armored St. Michael the Archangel stands, sword in hand and wings unfurled, symbolizing divine protection. The grouping underscores themes of intercession and heavenly guardianship.

Technique & Style

Granacci employs vivid, saturated hues: the Madonna and child are clothed in red and black, John the Baptist in a red mantle over a dark tunic, and St. Michael’s armor shines in a distinctive green. The figures are rendered with the clear linearity and balanced composition characteristic of early Renaissance Florentine painting, set against a modest landscape of trees and distant mountains.

History & Provenance

A pupil of Domenico Ghirlandaio, Granacci worked alongside contemporaries such as Michelangelo, sharing study sessions in Lorenzo de’ Medici’s sculpture garden. After its creation, the painting entered private collections before being acquired by the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, where it remains on display.

Context

The composition reflects the devotional practices of late 15th‑century Florence, where the Virgin, the infant Christ, and saints were often portrayed together to reinforce theological narratives. The inclusion of both a local saint, John the Baptist, and the celestial warrior Michael aligns the work with the city’s patronage and the broader Christian iconographic tradition.
