About this work

Overview

The work titled The Parable of the Prodigal Son is an oil painting executed by the Flemish brothers Frans Francken the Younger and Hieronymus Francken II. Produced in Antwerp during the early 17th century, roughly between 1610 and 1620, the canvas now belongs to the municipal collection of Amsterdam and is displayed on long‑term loan at the Rijksmuseum.

Subject & Meaning

The composition depicts a bustling interior banquet where diners gather around a laden table.

The composition depicts a bustling interior banquet where diners gather around a laden table. A lute‑player in brown attire provides music while guests eat, drink, and converse. Through the windows, miniature vignettes illustrate everyday activities—workers, horsemen, and other figures—suggesting a broader narrative context that alludes to the biblical parable of the wayward son’s return and reconciliation.

Technique & Style

Rendered in warm, earthy tones, the painters employ a rich palette of reds and golds that contrast with darker background areas. The scene is densely populated, with the main figures rendered in relatively larger scale and surrounding narrative episodes reduced to tiny, almost anecdotal panels that frame the central action.

History & Provenance

The painting entered the Dutch market when collector Adriaan van der Hoop purchased it in 1843. Van der Hoop later bequeathed the work to the city of Amsterdam in 1854, after which it became part of the municipal museum holdings and eventually found a permanent loan arrangement with the Rijksmuseum.

Context

Created during the flourishing period of Antwerp’s workshop tradition, the piece reflects the collaborative practice of the Francken brothers, who often combined religious storytelling with genre scenes. Its intricate, multi‑scene format aligns with contemporary Flemish approaches to visualizing biblical narratives through everyday life.
