About this work

Overview

Created in 1720, *Blumen mit Parklandschaft* is an oil painting by Italian Baroque specialist Gasparo Lopez, who was often called Gasparo dei Fiori for his focus on floral subjects. The work is part of the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and exemplifies the artist’s penchant for lush, naturalistic compositions.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas presents a stone‑set vase brimming with an assortment of pink, red, white and yellow blossoms, their stems and leaves spilling onto the surrounding surface. A modest pool of water rests to the right, while a distant park scene with trees, blue sky and white clouds frames the arrangement, suggesting a harmonious coexistence of cultivated beauty and open landscape.

Technique & Style

Lopez employs a meticulous, realistic approach, rendering each petal and leaf with fine brushwork that captures texture and translucency. The palette is vivid yet balanced, and the composition uses overlapping layers and subtle chiaroscuro to generate depth, guiding the viewer’s eye from the foreground vase to the receding foliage.

History & Provenance

Born near Naples around 1677, Lopez trained with Jean Baptiste Du Buisson and Andrea Belvedere before working in Rome, Venice and Dresden. He later served as court painter to the Grand Duke of Florence, where he was murdered in 1732. The painting entered the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s holdings in the 19th century, where it remains on display.

Context

Although primarily a Baroque artist, Lopez’s *Blumen mit Parklandschaft* has been linked to the later Barbizon school due to its naturalistic treatment of landscape elements. The work reflects the period’s fascination with detailed still lifes that blend decorative abundance with an emerging interest in realistic outdoor settings.
