Overview

Gerrit Dou’s small oil on canvas, titled *Portrait of an Old Woman Reading*, was executed around 1631–1632. The work depicts an elderly woman absorbed in a book, rendered with the meticulous detail characteristic of Dou’s early career. Measuring only a few centimeters across, the painting exemplifies the intimate genre scenes popular in Dutch art of the period.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter is shown seated, her gaze fixed on a lectionary or devotional text, suggesting a moment of private contemplation or prayer. The emphasis on reading highlights the value placed on literacy and personal piety among the Dutch middle class in the early seventeenth century, while the aged features convey a sense of lived experience and quiet dignity.

Technique & Style

Dou employs a fine, almost microscopic brushwork that captures the texture of the woman’s skin, the sheen of the book’s pages, and the subtle play of light across the dark background. The chiaroscuro modeling, while softer than Rembrandt’s, creates a three‑dimensional presence, and the polished surface reflects the artist’s training in the Leiden fijnschilder tradition.

History & Provenance

For many years the painting was mistakenly attributed to Rembrandt and even identified as a portrait of his mother. Scholarly re‑examination in the nineteenth century reassigned it to Dou, correcting the long‑standing error. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam acquired the work in November 1912, where it has remained in the collection ever since.

Context

Created during Dou’s early period after his apprenticeship with Rembrandt, the portrait illustrates the shift from grand biblical scenes to more intimate, domestic subjects that appealed to a growing market of private collectors. Its focus on an elderly, reading woman reflects contemporary interests in moralizing genre scenes that combined realism with subtle didactic messages.
