A founding member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, Pittoni later presided over the institution in 1758, underscoring his prominence in the Venetian art world. *The Birth of Christ* entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the nineteenth century, where it has remained on public display, contributing to the museum’s representation of Italian Baroque painting.

Created at a time when Venetian artists were negotiating the transition from the grandiosity of the high Baroque to the lighter, more decorative Rococo, the painting reflects both traditions.
