About this work
Overview
Executed in 1596, this oil on canvas portrays Virginia de’ Medici, a Florentine noblewoman who lived from 1568 to 1615. The work belongs to the collection of the Walters Art Museum. Its composition centers the sitter against a dark backdrop, emphasizing her face and attire through careful modeling of light and shadow.
Subject & Meaning
Virginia is presented with dark, tightly curled hair crowned by pearls, a white ruffled collar, and a richly draped dark garment trimmed in gold. A pearl necklace and matching earrings complete the ensemble. Her gaze is turned slightly leftward, and her expression remains composed, reflecting the dignified poise expected of a woman of her rank in late‑Renaissance Florence.
Technique & Style
The painter employs chiaroscuro to sculpt the figure, allowing the illuminated skin and fabric to emerge from the deep background. Soft transitions of tone convey volume, while the crisp rendering of pearls and gold accents demonstrates a meticulous handling of texture characteristic of Florentine Mannerism.
History & Provenance
Giovanni Maria Butteri, a disciple of Alessandro Allori and Francesco Salviati, created the portrait during his mature period. Butteri’s career included fresco work in the cloister of Santa Maria Novella and decorative commissions for the Studiolo of Francesco I in the Palazzo Vecchio. The painting entered the Walters Art Museum’s holdings through acquisition in the early 20th century.
