Van Steenwijk employs a precise linear perspective, a skill honed under his mentor Hans Vredeman de Vries, an architect‑painter. The brushwork is restrained, emphasizing architectural elements—walls, arches, and floor tiles—over elaborate detail, allowing the figures and their gestures to dominate the visual narrative.

Born circa 1550 in Kampen, the artist trained with Vredeman de Vries before working in several Northern European cities, including Aachen, Antwerp, and Frankfurt. *Fencing bout* entered the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s collection in the 19th century, where it remains part of the museum’s Dutch Golden Age holdings.

While van Steenwijk is best known for church interiors, this work demonstrates his broader interest in interior spaces and the social activities they hosted.
