Jordaens employs strong chiaroscuro, contrasting illuminated bodies against a shadowy backdrop to heighten drama. The figures are rendered with robust, fleshy forms typical of Flemish Baroque, and the brushwork conveys movement and tension. Created shortly after Jordaens rose to prominence in Flanders, the canvas reflects his status as the leading painter following the deaths of Rubens and Van Dyck.
