Executed in a realistic manner, the piece displays meticulous attention to surface texture: the granularity of the stones, the subtle sheen of wet sand, and the gentle ripples of water are rendered with fine brushwork. Created during the height of Denmark’s realist movement, the work reflects the influence of contemporary calls for national art championed by critic Niels Laurits Høyen. Lundbye, a contemporary of P. C. Skovgaard and Lorenz Frølich, produced the canvas as part of his broader series of Danish landscapes. It now belongs to the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst.
