About this work
Overview
This untitled black-and-white photograph depicts a stone sculpture of a person in a hunched, protective pose. The image is part of a larger collection of photographs.
Subject & Meaning
The sculpture shows a person sitting with their knees drawn up and arms wrapped around their legs, head tilted back. The tense pose suggests a sense of vulnerability or self-protection.
Technique & Style
The photograph is printed on a card, now faded, with a visible border and a small number in the corner. The image captures the texture of the stone, including cracks and uneven edges.
History & Provenance
The photograph was part of a series sent to William Kineton Parkes, a novelist and art historian, in response to questionnaires he distributed among sculptors in the 1920s. It was bequeathed to the Archive of Art and Design in 1938.

Yrjo Liipola carried a camera everywhere, not to take selfies, but to catch the way Finnish light bends at dusk over snow that’s already half-melted.
