The painting illustrates the Nativity, with the Virgin Mary kneeling reverently before the infant Jesus, who rests on her cloak. Joseph, depicted as a young man, and three angels gaze towards the child, while an ox and donkey appear behind Mary. This portrayal closely aligns with the influential visions of Saint Bridget of Sweden, which were widely disseminated. Key elements include the youthful appearance of the Virgin, the praying hands of Mary and Joseph, and the miraculous, painless birth that preserved Mary's virginity. A distant landscape featuring the annunciation to the shepherds occupies the upper right.

History & Provenance

This painting was once part of the collection of Cornelis Hoogendijk, where it was initially attributed to Geertgen tot Sint Jans. In 1912, it entered the Rijksmuseum's collection through a donation from Hoogendijk's sister, Maria Ida Adriana Hoogendijk. The current attribution to the Master of the Brunswick Diptych was established in 1927 by art historian Michael Friedländer, revising its earlier identification.

Context

The specific details within "The Nativity," such as the youthful Virgin and the depiction of a miraculous birth, reflect the enduring popularity of the revelations of Saint Bridget of Sweden. These texts, written a century prior, significantly shaped the visual representation of the Nativity during this period. The painting also shares stylistic and compositional similarities with other works attributed to the Master of the Brunswick Diptych, notably those found in Minneapolis and Glasgow, suggesting a consistent artistic approach.
