About this work

Overview

Nicolaes de Giselaer painted *The archangel Gabriel appearing to Zacharias* in 1625. Executed in oil on canvas, the work belongs to the Dutch Golden Age and is part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection. It portrays the biblical moment when the angel announces the future birth of John the Baptist to the priest Zechariah, set within an interior space.

Subject & Meaning

The scene captures the Annunciation to Zechariah, a narrative from the Gospel of Luke. Gabriel, the archangel, delivers the divine message, while Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth are shown in a state of reverence and anticipation. The composition emphasizes the sacred encounter, highlighting themes of prophecy and divine intervention in the lineage of Christ.

Technique & Style

De Giselaer employs a restrained chiaroscuro, allowing light to spill from an open doorway and illuminate select figures while the surrounding corners recede into shadow. The architectural setting—stone columns, arches, and an altar—creates depth, and the subtle gradations of tone give the figures a three‑dimensional presence within the confined space.

History & Provenance

Born in Dordrecht in 1583, de Giselaer worked in several Dutch cities, including Leiden, Utrecht, and Amsterdam, though documentation of his career is scarce. The painting has remained in the Netherlands and is now owned by the Rijksmuseum, where it is displayed among other early‑17th‑century religious works.
