Abildgaard employs a restrained palette typical of late‑18th‑century neoclassicism, emphasizing clear outlines and smooth modeling. The figures are rendered with a sculptural solidity, while the surrounding foliage and sky are suggested with softer brushwork, creating a balanced contrast between the narrative focus and the atmospheric setting.

A professor at the New Royal Danish Academy of Art, Abildgaard was also responsible for decorative schemes at Christiansborg and Fredensborg palaces. This painting entered the national collection of Denmark and is presently displayed at the Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains a representative example of his mythological oeuvre.
