About this work
Overview
A Stable is a landscape painting executed in oil by Philips Wouwerman, a prominent Dutch Golden Age artist, circa 1650. Characteristic of his oeuvre, which often featured hunting, landscape, and battle scenes, this work captures a dynamic stable environment.
Subject & Meaning
The painting depicts a bustling stable with multiple horses, people engaged in various activities (riding, standing, kneeling), and accompanying animals (dogs, chickens). The primary focus is on the horses, while the human figures and animal details contribute to the scene's vibrancy.
Technique & Style
Wouwerman employed chiaroscuro, with light entering from the left, casting shadows that enhance depth and create a near three-dimensional effect. The stable's interior, with rough wood walls and dark, thick roof beams, is rendered in meticulous detail.
History & Provenance
As a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, Wouwerman's work, including *A Stable*, reflects his affiliation with the Dutch artistic community of the time. The painting is currently part of the Rijksmuseum's collection.
