Pompeo Batoni’s late‑Baroque composition entitled *The Fall of Simon Magus* depicts a tumultuous moment drawn from the Acts of the Apostles. A crowd of figures reaches upward toward a levitating, half‑naked man, while a kneeling figure in a yellow robe anchors the foreground. Architectural columns frame the scene, and a dramatic sky looms behind, all rendered in the heightened chiaroscuro typical of the period.
Subject & Meaning
The narrative illustrates the biblical episode in which the sorcerer Simon Magus attempts to ascend to the heavens and is violently cast down by divine intervention. The chaotic gestures of the onlookers convey both awe and terror, emphasizing the triumph of apostolic authority over false prophecy. The central, outstretched figure embodies hubris, his fall serving as a moral warning against spiritual arrogance.
Technique & Style
Batoni employs a stark contrast of light and shadow, a hallmark of chiaroscuro, to model the bodies and accentuate the vertical thrust of the falling figure. The palette balances warm yellows and reds against cooler blues, while the crisp rendering of drapery and architectural elements reflects the academic training of the artist. The composition’s diagonal dynamism guides the viewer’s eye from the kneeling figure upward to the celestial drama.
History & Provenance
Originally conceived as a modello for a mosaic altarpiece in St. Peter’s Basilica, the work was later installed in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome. The version held by the Cleveland Museum of Art is believed to be a studio copy rather than Batoni’s autograph piece. Its acquisition traces back to early 20th‑century collectors who sought to bring Baroque studies to American institutions.
