About this work

Overview

A Young Roman Woman is an oil on panel painting created by Sebastiano del Piombo around 1512. It is currently housed in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.

Subject & Meaning

The painting depicts a seated woman holding a white cloth and a fur-trimmed wrap, with a landscape behind her. The basket of fruit she holds may identify her as Saint Dorothy, although the painting is also known as Young Roman Woman.

Technique & Style

The artist employed chiaroscuro, using dark shadows to create contrast and make the subject's face stand out against the lighter background. The woman's dress is rendered in pink with a red underside, and her cuffs are depicted in white lace.

History & Provenance

The painting was created during Sebastiano del Piombo's stay in Rome, where he worked on Agostino Chigi's Villa Farnesina project. Initially misattributed to Raphael, its correct attribution was established by Gustav Friedrich Waagen in 1835.
