Interior in Strandgade, Sunlight on the Floor

Hammershøi employs a subdued palette of whites, grays, and deep blacks, allowing the sunlight entering from the left window to become the focal point. The contrast between illuminated floorboards and shadowed corners creates a subtle chiaroscuro effect, lending volume to the space while preserving the painter’s characteristic atmospheric restraint.

Created at the turn of the twentieth century, the painting reflects Hammershøi’s engagement with Impressionist concerns for light and mood, filtered through his own minimalist sensibility. It entered the collection of Denmark’s national gallery, Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains on display as a representative example of the artist’s interior series.
