About this work

Overview

Vincent van Gogh created the oil painting Peasant Woman Digging Up Potatoes around 1885. Executed on canvas that has been mounted on a panel, the work measures modest dimensions typical of his figure studies from that period. It is presently displayed in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

Subject & Meaning

The composition shows a rural woman engaged in the labor of extracting potatoes, reflecting van Gogh’s interest in the dignity of agrarian work. Influenced by the French realist Jean‑François Millet, van Gogh portrayed peasants as devout and noble, emphasizing the physicality of their daily toil.

Technique & Style

Rendered in oil, the painting employs a muted palette and a loose, expressive brushstroke that anticipates the artist’s later, more vibrant style. The figure is simplified, with emphasis on gesture and the earthy texture of the soil, aligning with van Gogh’s “clog works” series of modest, intimate studies.

History & Provenance

Initially acquired by the collector J. Willebeek le Mair, the canvas later passed through an unnamed private owner before being offered at auction. Through the mediation of Brussels’ Palace of Fine Arts, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts secured the work, purchasing it for 300,000 francs.

Context

Created during van Gogh’s Dutch period, the painting belongs to a brief phase in mid‑1885 when the artist produced several large canvases, such as The Potato Eaters, before turning to smaller studies. This shift allowed him to focus on individual figures and the intimate aspects of peasant life.

Legacy

The piece is noted as the sole example of van Gogh’s early, darker Dutch output remaining in a Flemish collection. Curator Walther Vanbeselaere highlighted its rarity and value, marking it as the museum’s only van Gogh acquisition.
