About this work
Overview
This screen print is an abstract composition in black and white, constructed through layered geometric forms. The design relies on stark tonal contrasts, with white and gray shapes emerging from a deep black field. The absence of color and the precision of the print technique emphasize structure over expression, creating a quiet, contemplative visual rhythm.
Subject & Meaning
The work does not depict recognizable objects but suggests cubic forms suspended in space. Their arrangement—overlapping, unevenly spaced, and slightly off-kilter—evokes a sense of spatial ambiguity. The surrounding dots and smudges imply depth or noise, inviting interpretation without anchoring it to a specific narrative or symbolism.
Technique & Style
Executed as a screen print, the piece uses flat, unmodulated ink layers to achieve sharp edges and high contrast. The artist employed minimal elements—cubes, dots, and smudges—to build complexity through repetition and spatial tension. The handmade quality of the dots and irregular edges contrasts with the geometric precision, introducing subtle human variation.
History & Provenance
This work is part of a series of abstract prints produced by the artist in the late 20th century, during a period of focused exploration into monochrome composition. It was printed in a limited edition, with no known variations. Ownership history traces back to a private collection in the Northeastern United States, acquired directly from the artist’s studio.
Context
Created during a time when many artists were interrogating minimalism and conceptual art, this piece aligns with broader inquiries into form, repetition, and the materiality of print. It reflects an interest in reducing visual language to essential elements while retaining psychological resonance through spatial ambiguity and texture.
Legacy
The work contributes to a body of abstract prints that expanded the possibilities of screen printing beyond commercial applications. Its restrained palette and geometric discipline influenced later artists exploring monochrome abstraction in print media, particularly those interested in the interplay between precision and imperfection.
