About this work

Overview

Willem van de Velde the Younger painted *Encounter during the Battle of Kijkduin* in 1675. The oil canvas records a naval clash known as the Battle of Texel, focusing on the engagement of the Dutch warship Gouden Leeuw. It is part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection and exemplifies the Dutch Golden Age’s interest in historic maritime scenes.

Subject & Meaning

The composition captures a turbulent sea battle, with multiple vessels bearing red‑and‑white ensigns firing broadsides. Smoke rises from the cannons, and dark, churning water reflects the stormy sky. By omitting individual faces and concentrating on ships, flags, and elemental forces, the work emphasizes the collective drama of naval warfare rather than personal heroism.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil, the painting employs a muted palette of grays and blues punctuated by the bright reds of the flags. Van de Velde’s precise rendering of rigging, hull forms, and cannon fire demonstrates his expertise in marine observation, while the loose handling of clouds and sea surface conveys movement and atmospheric tension.

History & Provenance

Created by the younger van de Velde, who inherited his father’s specialization in seascapes, the canvas remained in private hands before entering the Rijksmuseum’s holdings. The artist’s family included his father, Willem van de Velde the Elder, also a marine painter, and his brother Adriaen van de Velde, a noted landscape artist.

Context

The Battle of Texel (1673) was a decisive encounter during the Third Anglo‑Dutch War, in which the Dutch fleet repelled an English invasion. Van de Velde’s depiction, produced two years after the event, reflects contemporary Dutch pride in naval resilience and serves as a visual record of the period’s maritime technology.
