History & Founding
The decision to create a war museum was made by the Greek Government in 1964. The building was constructed in 1972 during the military junta, originally intended as a 'monument to Greek valour and military prowess.' However, the museum did not open to the public until July 1975, following the collapse of the dictatorship in 1974. The inauguration marked the beginning of its role in preserving the nation's military heritage, utilizing a core collection that included objects from the 1968 War History of the Greeks exhibition in Zappeion and the private collection of Major Petros Saroglou.
Building & Architecture
Designed by architect Thucydides Valentis, the museum was purpose-built in 1970 and completed in 1972, reflecting the modern architectural trends of that era. The structure is located in the central part of Athens at Rizari 2-4. The exterior grounds serve as an open-air exhibition space, housing several artillery guns from different eras and decommissioned aircraft, including a replica of the Henry Farman III, which was Greece's first military aircraft. The interior is organized across four levels (floors), allowing for a chronological presentation of military history.

The museum's collection spans from prehistory to the modern era, featuring authentic artifacts such as Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean tools, as well as ancient Corinthian helmets and ship models. A significant portion of the ground floor is dedicated to the weapons collection of Major Petros Saroglou. The exhibits cover key historical periods including the campaigns of Alexander the Great, the Byzantine era with models of the Dromon ship and siege engines, and the Greek Revolution of 1821. The museum also houses extensive material on the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan Wars, World War I, the Asia Minor Campaign, and World War II, including the heroic resistance against Nazi occupation.
