About Blekinge Museum

Overview

Blekinge Museum is a regional museum located in Karlskrona, Sweden, dedicated to deepening and clarifying knowledge about the cultural heritage of the Blekinge region. It serves as a forum for current societal debate and aims to preserve and present the history and culture of the area. The museum operates under the status of a regional museum, a designation it received in 1983, and is responsible for managing the cultural heritage of the county.

History & Founding

The museum was founded by the Blekinge Historical Society, which was established in 1877. Since 1923, the institution has published its own periodical to disseminate research and findings. The museum underwent a significant disruption in its operational history when it was forced to close in October 2020. This closure was necessitated by severe structural damage to its buildings, including high moisture levels under the floors, subsidence, sinkholes, mold, and growth caused by sea water intrusion beneath the structure.

Building & Architecture

The museum's exhibition spaces, shop, playground, and a baroque garden are located in Grevagården. The building complex suffered extensive damage from environmental factors, specifically high humidity and sea water intrusion, which led to the closure in 2020. The facility was renovated and officially reopened with a new inauguration on June 18, 2025. The site includes a 'fact room' and serves as the primary physical location for the museum's activities in Karlskrona.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The museum's collection contains over 60,000 objects representing traces and memories from human history in Blekinge. A significant highlight of the archaeological collection is an over 8,000-year-old dog skeleton, which was discovered during archaeological excavations in Ljungaviken outside Sölvesborg. The museum also houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the World Heritage Site of the naval town of Karlskrona. In June 2024, a new permanent exhibition titled 'Back to the Stone Age' (Tillbaka till forntiden) was opened, focusing on the Stone and Bronze Age of Blekinge.

Significance & Digital Presence

Blekinge Museum plays a crucial role in preserving the specific cultural identity of Blekinge and acts as a public forum for societal issues. The institution has digitized its collections and makes them available on its own dedicated website, ensuring broader access to its holdings. The museum's ability to reopen in 2025 after addressing severe structural issues demonstrates its resilience and continued commitment to its mission of cultural preservation and education in the region.
