The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music is a non-profit foundation and art museum located in Athens, Greece. Established in 2004 and ratified by Presidential Decree, it was inaugurated in December 2007. The institution was founded by Basil Theocharakis, a Greek businessman, art collector, and painter, alongside his wife Marina Theocharakis, who is active in art exhibitions and publications. The Foundation operates as a public benefit entity dedicated to the promotion of Fine Arts and music, with a specific mandate to foster interdisciplinary dialogue between visual arts and musical performance.
History & Founding
The Foundation was created in 2004 by Basil and Marina Theocharakis to contribute to the cultural landscape of Greece beyond their individual artistic and business activities. In 2005, the Foundation acquired the Rentis Building, a listed property near the Hellenic Parliament, to serve as its permanent home. Following extensive restoration and interior redesign, the museum opened to the public on December 5, 2007. The inaugural event was a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the painter Spyros Papaloukas (1892–1957), a significant figure in modern Greek art whose works form a core part of the institution's holdings.
Building & Architecture
The Foundation is housed in the Rentis Building, constructed in the 1920s by architect Vassilis Tsagris. The structure is a notable example of the eclectic style of the Interwar period, drawing inspiration from Art Nouveau and the 'Wagner School.' The building was restored and redesigned to meet the requirements of a modern cultural institution while preserving its historical character. The facility features over 470 square meters of open-plan exhibition spaces, a 175-seat amphitheatre, a lobby, a café, a museum shop, and a roof garden, all of which host a variety of cultural events and private gatherings.
Mission & Educational Focus
The primary mission of the Foundation is to encourage the public to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue with music and the visual arts, with a particular emphasis on Greek artists and the 20th and 21st centuries. A distinct priority is placed on attracting younger audiences to cultivate their aesthetic sensibilities and familiarize them with museum environments. To achieve this, the Foundation organizes educational programs, workshops, and creative kits designed for children and students. It also sponsors academic research and collaborates with other institutions to disseminate its activities through modern media and international networks.

The Foundation's collection is anchored by a significant number of works by Spyros Papaloukas, largely donated by the artist's daughter.
