Founding & Historical Development
The institutional foundations of the museum were laid by Basil Iorgulescu, who established the initial public collections of archaeological, anthropological, and historical artifacts in Buzău. The museum has undergone several stages of expansion driven by the continuous development of its collections. It is currently housed in its third headquarters, having moved to its present location in 1977. The institution achieved its status as a county-level museum following this relocation, marking a significant milestone in its administrative history.
Building & Architecture
The museum currently operates within the building of the former Girls' Normal High School, a structure constructed between 1931 and 1937. This edifice is recognized as one of the most imposing constructions in the city and is officially included on the List of Historical Monuments in Buzău County. Permanent exhibitions were first opened in this building in 1980-1981 and have been modified several times since. A major restoration project was completed between 2010 and 2015, funded by the Regional Operational Program, which facilitated the implementation of the newest exhibition project.

The museum's holdings are diverse, encompassing consistent collections of history and archaeology, alongside significant ethnographic, artistic, numismatic, mineralogical, and natural science goods. A notable specific collection includes over 200 vintage telephones of both Romanian and foreign provenance, with the oldest pieces dating back to the early 20th century. The institution also holds works of ceramic and glass art. In recent years, the museum has initiated a campaign to collect artifacts representing daily life during the communist era to reconstruct the atmosphere of that specific historical period.
Scientific Activity & Publications
Under the museum's auspices, a robust scientific research activity is conducted both independently and in collaboration with other institutions. This research output is disseminated through a series of books published under the 'Biblioteca Mousaios' imprint. The institution also publishes two annual scientific bulletins titled 'Mousaios' and 'Analele Buzăului' (Annals of Buzău), as well as various catalogs and monographs.
