The Agència Catalana del Patrimoni Cultural (Catalan Heritage Agency) is a public law entity with its own legal personality, operating under the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The agency was legally created through Law 7/2011, enacted on July 27, 2011, as part of fiscal and financial measures by the Government of the Generalitat. Although the legal framework was established in 2011, the agency did not become fully operational until January 1, 2014, following the approval of its specific statutes on July 23, 2013. This delay allowed for the necessary administrative structuring and the definition of its internal governance bodies, including the Board of Administration and the Director's office, to ensure effective management of the assigned heritage portfolio.

The portfolio also encompasses significant historic sites such as the Roman Theatre of Tarragona, the Roman Villa of Els Munts, the Monastery of Santes Creus, and various castles including Cardona Castle and Miravet Castle. Additionally, it oversees key archaeological sites like Empúries and Ullastret, as well as the Art Rupestre (rock art) of Catalonia.
