About Ferdinand and Karin Knecht collection
Overview & Identity
The Ferdinand and Karin Knecht collection, also known as Sammlung Knecht, is a distinguished assembly of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings held as a permanent loan at the Kunsthaus Zürich. Comprising approximately 45 to 50 works, the collection is characterized by its focus on small-format, signed masterpieces that primarily depict profane genres. These include masterfully composed landscapes, splendid still lifes, and cheerful genre scenes, with a rare inclusion of three small religious panels that form a triptych. The collection represents artists from both the Protestant northern Netherlands and Catholic Flanders, serving as a significant example of private collecting within the museum's institutional framework.
History & Founding
The collection was assembled by Dipl. Eng. Ferdinand J. Knecht (2 March 1934 – 8 December 2025), a distinguished collector of 17th-century Dutch painting, alongside his wife Karin. Their dedication to art collecting was formally recognized in June 2016 when the couple became honorary members of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft. In 2016, the Kunsthaus Zürich welcomed the Knechts' exquisite collection of more than 50 works as a permanent loan, integrating these masterpieces into the museum's public display. The collection is currently housed in the Moser Building, where it illustrates the specific aspect of private collecting as opposed to institutional collecting.
Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings
The holdings feature prominent artists such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the II, David Teniers the Younger, and Catarina Ykens the Elder. The collection also includes works by Hendrick Avercamp, Jan van Goyen, Aert van der Neer, and Adriaen Coorte. The works are noted for their cheerful genre scenes, magnificent still lifes, and landscapes. A unique feature of the collection is the presence of three small panels with religious content, which are distinct from the otherwise secular focus of the assembly. These pieces are often signed and represent the high quality of connoisseurship applied by the collectors.
Significance & Context
The Knecht collection holds significant value within the Kunsthaus Zürich as it complements the museum's broader holdings of Dutch and Flemish art. It is specifically compared with works from the Ruzicka and Koetser Foundations, which are also on view. The collection's placement in the Moser Building allows for a direct comparison with other private collections housed in the extension building, such as those of Bührle, Merzbacher, and Looser. This arrangement highlights the diversity of collecting practices and the role of private donors in shaping the museum's narrative. A dedicated catalogue of the collection is available from the museum shop for further scholarly and public engagement.
