About Järvenpää Art Museum

Overview

The Järvenpää Art Museum is a cultural institution located in Järvenpää, Finland, dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the works of the Tuusulanjärvi artist community. Established in 1990, the museum holds Finland's most comprehensive collection of works by Eero Järnefelt and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. The museum serves as a hub for art education and cultural engagement, offering permanent exhibitions, temporary thematic shows, and a variety of public programs including guided tours and workshops.

History & Founding

The museum's origins date to 1990 when the City of Järvenpää received a significant art donation from Kaarina Aho, the granddaughter of Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and Juhani Aho. This initial collection formed the basis for the Soldan-Brofeldt gallery, which opened in the basement of the local library in 1992. The institution expanded significantly in 1997 when Elisa Paloheimo, the granddaughter of Eero Järnefelt, donated a comprehensive collection of her grandfather's works. The name 'Järvenpää Art Museum' was officially adopted in 2002 to reflect its growing professional status and expanded scope.

Building & Location

Located in the Pöytäalho district near the Järvenpää railway station, the museum is housed within a library building adjacent to the Järvenpää-talo cultural center. The facility was originally adapted to include exhibition spaces in the library's basement in 1992. Over the years, the museum has undergone expansions to its exhibition and storage areas to accommodate the growing collection and increased visitor numbers. The location places the museum in close proximity to the historic homes of the artists it celebrates, including Ainola and Suviranta.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The core of the collection consists of works by Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and Eero Järnefelt, representing the largest holdings of their art in Finland. The collection features Soldan-Brofeldt's paintings related to her home, maritime views from Tvärminne, and various drawings. Järnefelt's holdings include oil paintings, pastels, gouaches, and graphics depicting iconic Finnish landscapes such as Suviranta and Koli. A significant deposit in 2016 from the Paloheimo Heritage Foundation added over 90 works, including pieces by Järnefelt's uncle Mihail Clodt and the renowned Russian painter Ilja Repin.

Significance & Legacy

The Järvenpää Art Museum plays a vital role in preserving the legacy of the Tuusulanjärvi artist colony, a group central to the development of Finnish national identity and visual art at the turn of the 20th century. By holding the most extensive collections of its two most prominent members, the museum provides a unique window into the artistic and social history of the region. The institution actively engages the public through exhibitions that explore themes of nature, family life, and travel, connecting contemporary audiences with the artistic heritage of the area.
