Overview & Identity
Jersey Heritage is an independent trust and registered charity in Jersey, formally established on 3 June 1983. It serves as the island's primary custodian of historic sites, museums, and public archives. The organization is responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of properties that collectively tell the story of Jersey's history, culture, and environment. Its mission is dedicated to protecting Jersey's unique culture and heritage, holding extensive collections of artefacts, works of art, documents, and environmental specimens. The trust is financed through an annual grant from the States of Jersey and self-generated income, operating as a key cultural institution for the island.
History & Founding
The trust was formally registered in Jersey on 3 June 1983. It was created to consolidate the management of the island's major historic sites, museums, and public archives under a single independent body. The Jersey Archive, a key component of the trust, was established later in 1993 to specifically handle the cataloging and storage of historical documents and works of art. The organization relies on an annual grant from the States of Jersey alongside income generated from its operations, ensuring the preservation and accessibility of the island's heritage for future generations.
Building & Architecture
Jersey Heritage manages a wide array of architectural sites, including Mont Orgueil Castle in Gorey, a medieval fortress with links to the English Crown that served as the island's primary defense for over 400 years. The castle underwent significant renovations in the mid-1500s to adapt to artillery warfare, including the extension of the Keep into a D-shaped bastion and the construction of the Grand Battery. Other managed sites include Elizabeth Castle, a fortress off the coast of St Helier; Hamptonne Country Life Museum, a 15th-century farm estate; and La Hougue Bie, an ancient Neolithic site featuring a longhouse and a dolmen built around 6,000 years ago. The Jersey Museum and Art Gallery is located at Weighbridge Place in St Helier.
Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings
The trust holds significant collections, most notably the Grouville Hoard, a massive Iron Age coin hoard discovered in 2012. The Jersey Archive was responsible for the initial examination of the hoard, which consists of thousands of silver coins and was purchased by the Government of Jersey for £4.25 million in 2021. The hoard was exhibited at the Jersey Museum from May to December 2014. Other holdings include artefacts related to the German Occupation of Jersey, rural life at Hamptonne, maritime history at the Jersey Maritime Museum, and the Occupation Tapestry Gallery. The collections also feature works of art, documents, and specimens relating to the island's natural environment.
Significance & Public Access
Jersey Heritage plays a vital role in preserving the island's tangible and intangible heritage, offering research facilities for family history, building history, and the study of the Occupation of the Channel Islands. The organization provides public access to its sites, with the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery offering free entry until 1 July 2026. The trust also manages the Jersey Maritime Museum, which houses the Occupation Tapestry Gallery, and maintains the island's only working signal station. Through its extensive network of sites, including towers, forts, and ancient monuments, Jersey Heritage ensures the accessibility of Jersey's rich and diverse history to both residents and visitors.
