About Kröller-Müller Museum
Overview
The Kröller-Müller Museum is a national art museum and sculpture garden located in Otterlo, within the Hoge Veluwe National Park in the Netherlands. Established in 1938, it holds the second-largest collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings in the world, surpassed only by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The museum is renowned for its unique integration of art and nature, featuring a vast sculpture garden set within a forest park. It serves as a repository for a diverse collection of late 19th- and 20th-century art, including masterpieces by modern masters such as Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso, and Piet Mondrian.
History & Founding
The museum was founded by Helene Kröller-Müller (1869–1939), a shipping heiress and avid art collector who, advised by H.P. Bremmer, was among the first to recognize the genius of Vincent van Gogh. In 1935, she donated her entire collection to the state of the Netherlands. The museum building opened to the public on July 13, 1938. Helene Kröller-Müller served as the museum's first director in the year prior to her death in 1939. The collection was originally intended for a grander structure begun in 1920, but financial constraints led to the construction of a more modest building designed by Henry van de Velde.
Architecture & Building
The original museum building was designed by the Belgian architect Henry van de Velde and opened in 1938. It was intended as a temporary home pending a larger structure that was never completed due to financial issues. In the 1970s, a new exhibition wing was added, designed by the Dutch architect Wim Quist, which opened in 1977. The architectural ensemble also includes the Gerrit Rietveld pavilion and the Aldo van Eyck pavilion located within the sculpture garden, reflecting the museum's commitment to modern architectural design alongside its art collection.
Collection Highlights
The museum possesses a considerable collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh, including famous works such as 'Café Terrace at Night' and 'Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate)'. Other significant holdings include works by Georges-Pierre Seurat, such as 'Le Chahut', and Piet Mondrian. The collection spans from 16th–18th-century Dutch, Italian, and German paintings to European drawings, prints, and ceramics. Notable modern works include pieces by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Fernand Léger. In 2012, the museum confirmed a painting acquired in 1974 as an authentic van Gogh, 'Still Life with Meadow Flowers and Roses', using advanced X-ray technology.
Sculpture Garden
The Kröller-Müller Museum features one of the largest sculpture gardens in Europe, covering more than 75 acres (30 hectares) within the forest park. Added in 1961, the garden reflects Helene Kröller-Müller's conception of a symbiosis between art, architecture, and nature. The collection includes works by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Jean Dubuffet, Mark di Suvero, Lucio Fontana, Claes Oldenburg, and Coosje van Bruggen. The garden is designed for visitors to stroll past these modern and contemporary sculptures, offering a unique experience of art in a natural setting.
Significance & Legacy
The Kröller-Müller Museum is significant for its role in establishing the reputation of Vincent van Gogh and for its pioneering integration of a major art collection with a national park setting. It remains a key institution for the study of modern art, particularly De Stijl and Futurism. The museum's visitor numbers have fluctuated, with a peak of over 400,000 in 2019 before a decline during the pandemic, recovering to 283,000 in 2025. The museum continues to host temporary exhibitions and educational programs, maintaining its status as a leading cultural destination in the Netherlands.
