About Kumu
Overview
Kumu Art Museum serves as the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia and stands as one of the largest and most monumental exhibition venues in the country. Located in the Kadriorg district of Tallinn, it functions as the primary institution for preserving and interpreting Estonian art from the 18th century to the present day. The museum's mandate extends beyond mere preservation; it actively positions itself as an initiator of social and cultural debate through its exhibitions of both art history and contemporary art, offering a platform for new ideas from artists in Estonia and abroad.
History & Founding
The Art Museum of Estonia was originally founded on November 17, 1919, but for decades it lacked a permanent, purpose-built home, operating instead out of temporary spaces and the 18th-century Kadriorg Palace. Following Estonia's regained independence in 1991, Kadriorg Palace was closed for renovation due to severe disrepair. In 1993, the largest architectural competition in Estonia at the time was held to design a new museum. The project was realized after a prolonged building process, with the museum finally opening its doors to the public in 2006, marking the first time Estonia had a building intentionally constructed specifically for an art museum.
Building & Architecture
Designed by Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori, the Kumu building covers an area of 20,926 square meters and was completed in 2005. The architectural concept prioritized blending the structure into the surrounding limestone cliff of the Kadriorg park rather than dominating it. The design features a closed inner courtyard as the main focus, with curving exhibition halls in a flanking wing connected by a ramp that divides the administrative and conservation areas from the public lobby and galleries. The architect utilized natural materials with local traditions, including dolomite, wood, and copper, to harmonize with the environment.
Significance & Facilities
As the first museum in Estonia intentionally built for its purpose, Kumu represents a major milestone in the nation's cultural infrastructure. Beyond its exhibition halls, the facility is designed to be multifunctional, featuring a 246-seat auditorium for concerts, lectures, and performances, as well as an education centre with study rooms for young people. The museum also includes a roof terrace that offers views of the park and city. Its location in Kadriorg places it in an ensemble with other museum branches, including the Kadriorg Art Museum and the Niguliste Museum, creating a significant cultural hub.
