History & Founding
The museum's origins trace back to 1869, but its current main building was constructed between 1903 and 1905. It was the first building in the Baltics specifically designed for museum purposes. The institution was led by its first director, the Baltic German architect Wilhelm Neumann, who also designed the structure, serving from 1905 to 1919. Significant figures in its construction included Ludwig Kerkovius, the former Mayor of Riga. The museum underwent a major reconstruction between 2010 and 2015, which doubled the total size of the building.

Designed by Wilhelm Neumann, the museum is a notable historicist-style structure, representing one of the last eclectic-style buildings constructed in Riga. The architecture features Baroque forms and is finished with plaster, sandstone, and granite. The exterior includes sculptural groups created by August Volz, while the interior decoration incorporates Art Nouveau elements. The building is designated as a national architectural monument and is considered one of the most impressive historical structures within the Riga avenue circle. Recent renovations added two roof terraces accessible to visitors.
