About Luca Paul Communal Library in Domnesti

Overview

The Biblioteca Comunală "Luca Paul" in Domnești, Argeș, is recognized as the oldest rural library in Romania. Located in the commune of Domnești, approximately 157 kilometers from Bucharest, the institution serves as both a public library and a museum repository. It currently holds a collection of over 11,000 volumes and a significant museum section containing icons, metalwork, coins, and folk art. The library operates within the local House of Culture and provides services such as home lending and reading room access, supported by modern digital equipment through the Biblionet program.

The Founder: Luca Paul

Luca Paul (1864–1934) was a prominent local figure, serving as a teacher and director of the communal school for over 20 years. Born in Domnești, he later became the General Inspector at the Central Bank of Cooperation in Bucharest and authored four volumes between 1885 and 1922. Paul was instrumental in the community's educational development, initiating the construction of a new school building in 1903 and advocating for compulsory education in an era when rural attendance was low. He is remembered for his efforts to improve the school's conditions, which he described as previously being the "most neglected house in the commune," and for his vision in establishing the library that now bears his name.

Building & Architecture

Originally, the library functioned in a building constructed specifically for it by the "Școala Nouă" society in the late 19th or early 20th century, a project championed by Luca Paul. Currently, the library operates within the communal House of Culture (Casa de Cultură) in Domnești. The institution occupies a space of approximately 100 square meters. While the current building serves as the library's home, the commune of Domnești is noted for several other historical monuments, including the 1806 Ion Hirică house and the 1826–1831 "Intrarea în Biserică" church complex, situating the library within a rich architectural heritage.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The library's collection totals 11,122 items, including 10,930 Romanian books and 188 foreign volumes. The museum section is particularly distinguished, housing 112 icons (some dating to the 16th century, such as the "Saint John the Baptist" and "Mother of God with Child" from 1518–1519), 40 metalwork pieces, 100 coins, and 60 items of folk art. Rare book holdings include the "Floarea Darurilor" (1700), considered the first secular literature book printed in Romanian, as well as the "Snagov" (1700), "Mystirio Sacrament" (1651), and the "Gospel" (1729). The ethnographic collection features traditional clothing like the "marama" woven from fine silk and tools related to pastoralism and woodworking.

Significance & Legacy

As the oldest rural library in Romania, the "Luca Paul" library represents a pioneering model of rural cultural development and literacy. Its survival and growth over nearly a century and a half highlight the enduring impact of local educational initiatives. The institution's unique dual role as a library and a museum, preserving both literary heritage and tangible folk art, makes it a vital repository for the history of the Argeș region. The collection, assembled through the efforts of the "Luca Paul" Cultural Society and local clergy and artists, serves as a testament to the community's commitment to preserving its identity and history.
