About Modemuseum Hasselt

Overview

Modemuseum Hasselt is a specialized fashion museum located in Hasselt, Belgium. Established in 1986, it is dedicated to the history of Western fashion from 1750 to the present day. The museum is distinguished by its lack of a permanent exhibition; instead, it presents two new temporary exhibitions annually, allowing for a dynamic exploration of diverse themes and objects within the fashion world.

History & Founding

The museum was founded in 1986 following an initiative by the then-mayor of Hasselt. Its collection foundation was laid in 1987 and significantly expanded in 1989 with the acquisition of a major collection from a Romanian costume designer, scenographer, and architect. This acquisition formed a critical core for the museum's holdings, which now number approximately 18,000 items including clothing and accessories.

Building & Architecture

The museum is housed in a unique 17th-century building known as the 'Oud Gasthuis' (Old Hospital). Located at Gasthuisstraat 11, this historic structure provides a distinctive architectural setting for the fashion exhibitions. The building itself is a significant heritage site in Hasselt, repurposed to serve as a modern cultural institution for fashion history.

Collection Highlights

The collection comprises approximately 18,000 pieces of clothing and accessories, tracing the evolution of Western fashion from 1750 to the present. The core of the collection includes the significant 1989 acquisition of the Romanian designer's work. The museum actively acquires both museum-quality historical pieces and creations by contemporary designers to ensure a comprehensive and evolving archive.

Exhibition Strategy

Unlike many museums with permanent galleries, Modemuseum Hasselt operates without a fixed presentation. It offers two attractive and engaging temporary exhibitions per year, each focusing on specific themes or objects. This strategy allows the museum to frequently refresh its content, often incorporating loans and exploring cross-pollinations between different eras and styles.

Significance & Recognition

The museum has gained recognition for its contributions to the field of fashion heritage. In 2013, the institution received a notable award, highlighting its impact and quality in the cultural sector. Its unique model of rotating exhibitions and its focus on both historical and contemporary fashion make it a significant player in the European museum landscape.
