About Museum of City History Leipzig

Overview & Identity

The Museum of City History Leipzig (Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig) is a classical cultural history institution dedicated to the comprehensive history of Leipzig from its origins to the present day. It operates as a network of multiple locations throughout the city, functioning as a central hub for the city's cultural heritage. The museum adheres to the criteria of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the guidelines of the German Museum Association, prioritizing professional expertise across all departments and maintaining a focus on advanced digital collection documentation. Its core mission involves providing a comprehensive overview of the totality of cultural-historical transmission and urban life, combining diverse themes and access points from its own holdings with a commitment to lively mediation, critical multiperspectivity, and participatory integration into the city society.

History & Founding

The museum originated from the initiative of Leipzig citizens and the Leipzig History Association (Leipziger Geschichtsverein), which was founded in 1867. Following various temporary locations, the museum's collections found a permanent home in the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) in 1909. This location has withstood significant challenges, including massive war damage and political-ideological instrumentalization during both German dictatorships. The institution has maintained a close collaboration with the citizens of the city and their engagement throughout its history, supported by the Hieronymus-Lotter-Gesellschaft, the Förderverein of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, the Sports Museum, and various civic associations and initiatives of historical culture.

Building & Locations

The museum complex is distributed across several historic buildings and monuments in Leipzig. The primary location is the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), which has housed the main collections since 1909. Other significant branches include the Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Monument to the Battle of the Nations) and its Forum 1813, the Capa-Haus, Haus Böttchergäßchen, the Children's Museum, the Schillerhaus, the Museum Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, the Old Exchange (Alte Börse), and the Sports Museum. The institution is currently planning a new central depot to address future challenges and the need for modernized storage and presentation spaces.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The museum's collections comprise approximately 600,000 objects covering all genres of material, written, and pictorial transmission. Key collection areas include city and regional history, everyday culture/folklore, art and arts and crafts, graphics, music and theater history, numismatics, militaria, and prehistory/archaeology. Significant sub-collections include the Photothek with 80,000 objects, nearly 50,000 library holdings, and over 85,000 items in the sports history collection. The museum actively continues to collect for the future, adapting to changing perception habits in the digital age while preserving traditional strengths.

Significance & Mission

The Museum of City History Leipzig serves as a vital link between the city's past and present, offering a unique perspective on the entirety of Leipzig's cultural-historical transmission. Its significance lies in its ability to combine diverse themes from its extensive holdings to create varied access points for the public. The institution emphasizes a critical and multiperspective approach to history, fostering a participatory relationship with the city's inhabitants. It aims to bridge traditional museum tasks with the virtual space, ensuring that the city's history remains accessible and relevant through modern publication and mediation forms.
