About Museum of Islamic Art
Overview & Identity
The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), located in Doha, Qatar, is a globally acclaimed institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of Islamic art. Founded in 2008 as one of the first major projects initiated by Qatar Museums, it houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Islamic art in the world. The museum represents over 1,400 years of artistic history, spanning from the 7th to the 20th centuries, and features masterpieces from three continents: the Middle East, Spain, and China. Its mission is to connect art and culture through an expanding network of museums, heritage sites, and festivals, presenting a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions that illuminate the diversity of Islamic cultures.
History & Founding
The museum was established in 2008 following a vision to create a world-class repository for Islamic art. The project was initiated by Qatar Museums, with the renowned Chinese American architect I. M. Pei selected to design the building. Pei, who was 91 years old at the time of the museum's completion, insisted on a stand-alone location to avoid encroachments by future buildings. He suggested an artificial island off the Doha Corniche, approximately 60 meters from the shore, to ensure the structure's isolation and prominence. The museum officially opened its doors in 2008 and has since become a symbol of cultural exchange between Qatar and the world. In late 2021, the museum underwent a ten-month facilities enhancement project, leading to its reopening on October 4, 2022, during the 'Qatar Creative' National Cultural Event.
Architecture & Design
Designed by I. M. Pei, the museum's architecture is a masterful blend of traditional Islamic design principles and 21st-century innovation. The complex consists of a five-storey main building and an adjacent education wing, connected by a large central courtyard. The main building features a high domed atrium within a central tower, constructed with cream-coloured limestone that captures the changing light and shade throughout the day. The interior is dominated by a curved double staircase leading to the first floor, beneath an ornate circular metal chandelier. A 45-metre-tall window on the north side offers panoramic views of the bay, while an oculus at the top of the atrium reflects patterned light within the faceted dome. Geometric patterns, characteristic of Islamic art, adorn the spaces throughout the museum, providing a unique backdrop for the collections.
Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings
The MIA collection includes a vast array of artefacts and artworks from across three continents, covering the 7th to the 20th centuries. The holdings encompass metalwork, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, textiles, and glass, drawn from both secular and religious spheres. These works originate from the treasure houses of princes to the personal homes of ordinary people. A particularly significant item in the collection is the Quranic manuscript MS.474.2003. The museum's collection is noted for its breadth, representing the diversity found in Islamic heritage. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum lends items for international exhibitions, such as the four items lent to the Diriyah Biennale Foundation for the first Islamic Art Biennale in 2023, and eight works for the 2025 Biennale.
Significance & Legacy
The Museum of Islamic Art stands as a symbol of cultural exchange and a testament to the enduring legacy of Islamic art. Its location on an artificial island and its distinctive architecture by I. M. Pei have made it an iconic landmark in Doha and a major tourist destination. The museum plays a crucial role in education and outreach, offering various programs including the 'Challenge Camp' launched in May 2024, which teaches Islamic and local values. The museum also manages the adjacent MIA Park, a waterfront open space featuring cafes and a children's play area. Through its dynamic exhibition program and educational initiatives, the MIA continues to illuminate the heritage of Islamic cultures across the globe, fostering a deeper understanding of the art and history of the Islamic world.
