The Museum of Oltenia (Muzeul Olteniei) is a national multidisciplinary museum located in Craiova, the capital of Dolj County in the historical region of Oltenia, Romania. Established as a unified institution in 1928, it serves as the primary cultural repository for the region, encompassing archaeology, history, ethnography, and natural sciences. The museum operates through three distinct sections housed in separate historic buildings within the city center, each dedicated to a specific domain of study and preservation. It is recognized as a national museum, reflecting its importance in preserving the cultural and natural heritage of southern Romania.
History & Founding
The institution's origins are traced to a series of foundational events in the early 20th century. The archaeology section was the first to be established, founded on April 1, 1915. This was followed by the creation of the natural history section in 1923. The museum was formally reorganized and established in its current multidisciplinary structure in 1928. The core of the museum's initial collection was derived from donations made in 1908, which provided the essential artifacts and specimens that allowed for the subsequent development of the separate sections. The institution has since celebrated over a century of existence, marking its 110th anniversary in 2025.
Architecture & Buildings
The museum occupies three significant historic buildings, each with its own architectural heritage. The Ethnography section is housed in the 'Casele Băniei' (Ban's House) on Matei Basarab Street, the oldest civil building in Craiova, dating back to the 15th century and originally built by the Craiovești boyars, later renovated by Constantin Brâncoveanu. The History and Archaeology section is located in a building on Madona Dudu Street, constructed in 1905-1906 as a girls' school for the Madona Dudu church; this structure is a listed historic monument that has undergone multiple restorations and expansions. The Natural Sciences section resides in a building on Popa Șapcă Street, a former printing house (Tipografia Ramuri) constructed in 1926, which is also an architectural monument.

The museum's collections are extensive and diverse, reflecting the region's rich history and natural environment. The Natural Sciences section features significant holdings in paleontology, including Quaternary mammals, as well as malacological, entomological, oological, ornithological, and mammalogical collections, alongside mineralogy and herbarium specimens. The Ethnography section displays traditional clothing, tools, and objects related to the traditional occupations of the Oltenia region, housed within the historic Casele Băniei. The History and Archaeology section holds artifacts spanning from prehistoric times (dating back to 1600–1150 BC) through various historical periods, including numismatic collections and archaeological finds from the region.
