About National Museum in Prague

Overview & Identity

The National Museum (Národní muzeum) is the largest and most prominent museum institution in the Czech Republic, serving as a public repository for the nation's natural scientific and historical collections. Located at the upper end of Wenceslas Square in Prague, the museum encompasses a vast complex that includes the historic main building, the New Building (formerly the Federal Assembly), and various other exhibition spaces and storage facilities. The institution houses nearly 14 million items, covering a broad spectrum of Czech history, culture, and natural sciences, and functions as a central hub for research, education, and public engagement. Its mission extends beyond mere preservation, acting as a platform to assert national identity and make knowledge accessible to all inhabitants of the land, rather than just the nobility.

History & Founding

The museum was founded on April 15, 1818, by Count Kašpar Maria Šternberg, a prominent botanist and mineralogist who served as the first president of the Society of the Patriotic Museum. The seeds of the institution were sown earlier in the 1780s with the establishment of the Royal Bohemian Society of Learning, whose members donated items from their private galleries to form the core collection. Initially, the museum focused heavily on natural sciences due to Šternberg's expertise, only acquiring significant historical objects in the 1830s and 1840s. In 1949, the national government took over the museum, and its role was further detailed in the Museum and Galleries Act of 1959. The institution underwent a major reconstruction and reopened in October 2018, marking the bicentenary of its founding.

Building & Architecture

The main building, a masterpiece of Neo-Renaissance architecture, was designed by Josef Schulz following a competition announced in 1883. Construction took place after the demolition of the town wall at the upper end of Wenceslas Square, with the building opening in 1891. The exterior features a vast ramp leading to a classical entrance surmounting a triple arch, adorned with statues of notable Czech and foreign figures such as Tycho de Brahe and Joachim Barrande. The building has witnessed significant historical events, including damage from tank fire during the 1968 Soviet invasion and construction damage from the metro. A major restoration project began in 2011, and the building was fully reopened in 2018, connected to the New Building via a tunnel in 2019.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The museum's collection of nearly 14 million items is divided into several departments, including the Historical Museum and the Museum of Natural Science. The medieval collection is particularly notable, featuring jewelry, panel paintings, wooden sculptures, and weapons used during the Hussite movement of the 15th century. Specific highlights include a silver tiara of a duke from the 12th century, the Rosenberg antependium (a precious embroidery dated around 1370), and the reliquary of St. Eligius. The archives hold rare charts and manuscripts of Czech history from the 11th to the 20th century, while the natural science collections include extensive rock and fossil bequests from Joachim Barrande. The museum also houses a significant collection of Bohemian porcelain and glass from before the 18th and 19th centuries.
