History & Founding
The organization was founded in 2020 through the merger of two major predecessor institutions: the Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum and the OÖ Kulturquartier. The roots of the museum tradition in the region date back to 1833 with the establishment of the 'Verein des vaterländischen Museums für Österreich ob der Enns'. For nearly two centuries, the Landesmuseum operated as the central museum institution, managing extensive collections on natural history, cultural history, and art. The 2020 restructuring consolidated these historical operations with the cultural programming of the Kulturquartier to create a unified, modern cultural enterprise capable of managing diverse venues and collections more efficiently.
Building & Architecture
The OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH operates across sixteen different locations throughout Linz and the wider state of Upper Austria. Key architectural sites include the Francisco Carolinum, originally built in the historicist style and opened in 1895 as a museum on Museumsstraße, which now houses national and international photography and media art. The organization also manages the Schlossmuseum Linz and the Biologiezentrum in Linz-Dornach, a facility constructed to address space constraints in the main museum and dedicated to natural science collections. These buildings range from historicist structures to specialized modern facilities, reflecting the diverse nature of the institution's holdings.
