About "Octavian Goga" Cluj County Library
Overview & Identity
The "Octavian Goga" Cluj County Library (Biblioteca Județeană "Octavian Goga" Cluj) is the principal public library serving Cluj County in Romania. Located in Cluj-Napoca, the institution is named after Octavian Goga, a prominent Romanian poet, writer, and politician from Transylvania. The library functions as a cultural and informational hub for the region, maintaining a significant collection of documents and providing access to various media formats. It is administered by the Cluj County Council and serves a diverse population, including a notable Hungarian-speaking minority within its holdings.
History & Founding
The library's institutional history traces back to the early 20th century with the establishment of the "Biblioteca Populară" (Popular Library), which began operations in 1921. However, the formal establishment of the Cluj County Library as a distinct administrative entity occurred in 1951. Initially, the library operated within the Palace of Justice (Palatul Justiției). In the 1990s, the building was returned to its original owners, necessitating a relocation. This period of transition led to the planning and construction of a new, dedicated facility to accommodate the growing collection and public needs.
Building & Architecture
The library currently resides in a modern, seven-story building located in the Mărăști residential district of Cluj-Napoca. The construction of this new facility began after the library was forced to vacate its previous location in the Palace of Justice. The building, which was not fully completed at the time of its initial opening, officially opened its doors to the public in 2002. The structure houses 16 reading rooms, designed to provide ample space for study and research. The address is Dorobanților Street (formerly Külső-Közép) 104.
Collection Highlights & Holdings
As of 2013, the library's collection comprised 757,007 documents. This vast archive includes 689,492 books, 20,307 audio or film recordings, 8,152 electronic documents, 1,579 manuscripts, and 37,477 other types of works. Approximately 8-9% of the collection is in Hungarian, primarily consisting of fiction, reflecting the demographic composition of the region. The library utilizes modern information technology, having adopted the Tinlib software in 1994 and later the Qulto system in 2012 to manage its catalog and services.
Significance & Legacy
The "Octavian Goga" Cluj County Library plays a critical role in the cultural life of Cluj-Napoca and the wider county. With an average daily attendance of 1,600 visitors and an annual circulation of nearly 500,000 documents (as recorded in 2012), it remains a vital resource for students, researchers, and the general public. The library's commitment to preserving both Romanian and Hungarian cultural heritage, evidenced by its significant bilingual collection, underscores its importance as a bridge between communities in Transylvania. It also manages several branch libraries, including locations in the Teleki House and various residential neighborhoods.
Leadership & Administration
The library has been led by several directors throughout its history. Doina Popa served as the director until 2009. Since 2009, the institution has been under the leadership of Sorina Stanca. The library's governance falls under the Cluj County Council, which acts as the founding and sustaining body. The institution's management has overseen significant milestones, including the transition from the Palace of Justice to the new Mărăști building and the modernization of its digital infrastructure.
