About Royal Court National Museum Complex

Overview & Identity

Curtea Veche, known as the Old Princely Court, is a historical site and museum complex located in the historic center of Bucharest, Romania. Originally built as a palace or residence in 1459 during the rule of Vlad III Dracula (Vlad the Impaler), the site serves as the economic and political nucleus of the early city. Today, the ruins and reconstructed elements of the court are operated as a museum by the Muzeul Municipiului București (Bucharest Municipal Museum). The complex includes the remains of the Voivode's Palace and the Annunciation Church of Saint Anthony, representing one of the most significant archaeological and historical sites in the capital.

History & Founding

The court was established in 1459 when Vlad III Dracula issued a Slavonic document referring to the 'fortress' in Bucharest as his 'princely residence'. This marked the beginning of Bucharest as a permanent seat of power, necessitated by the need to protect the southern border against the Ottoman Empire. The site was continuously used and modified by subsequent rulers. Mircea Ciobanul repaired the palace and defined city limits in the 16th century. Matei Basarab later completely rebuilt the palace, making it 'amazingly elegant'. The old court was eventually auctioned in 1798 by Constantine Hangerli after Alexander Ypsilantis built a new court in 1775. Archaeological excavations at the site began in 1953, leading to its current status as a museum.

Building & Architecture

The architectural history of the complex reflects the evolution of Wallachian princely residences. The original structure by Vlad III was a fortified residence. Under Matei Basarab, it was described as having a 'charming aspect, much finer and gayer'. The most significant architectural contribution came from Constantin Brâncoveanu, who rebuilt and extended the palace using stone and constructed a great marble staircase at the entrance. The complex also houses the Annunciation Church of Saint Anthony, built by Mircea Ciobanul in 1559. This church is noted as the oldest religious building maintained in its original aspect in Bucharest and serves as the burial site of Mircea Ciobanul.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

As an archaeological and historical museum, the collection focuses on the material culture of the princely court and the city's early history. While specific inventory lists are not detailed in the primary source, the site features the excavated remains of the Voivode's Palace, including structural elements like the oven and foundations. The museum preserves the Annunciation Church of Saint Anthony in its original state. The site also displays a bust of Vlad Țepeș by Dumitru Pasima. The collection is intrinsically linked to the documents issued from the site, such as the 1459 Slavonic document, which is conserved at the National Museum of Romanian History but is central to the site's narrative.

Significance & Legacy

Curtea Veche holds immense historical significance as the birthplace of Bucharest as a permanent capital and the seat of Vlad the Impaler. It represents the continuity of Wallachian statehood and the city's development from a fortified town to a major European capital. The site has inspired significant cultural works, most notably Mateiu Caragiale's novel 'Craii de Curtea-Veche' (The Rogues of the Old Court). Currently, the museum is at the center of efforts to restore the historic center of Bucharest, serving as a key landmark for understanding the city's medieval origins and its architectural heritage.
