The Tartu Art Museum is the second largest art museum in Estonia, dedicated to preserving and exhibiting Estonian and foreign art associated with Estonia from the 18th century to the present day. It operates under the leadership of director Rael Artel, who has held the position since 2013, bringing extensive experience from international contemporary art curation.
History & Founding
The foundation of the museum's collection began in 1918 with 133 works donated by the Pallas artistic association, a pivotal group in Estonian art history. The first cataloged entry was 'Interior' by Ida Anton-Agu. The museum underwent significant turmoil during World War II; in 1943, a bombing raid destroyed the brick building at Lai 17 that housed the collection, though most works were saved. Following several relocations, the museum was re-established in 1946 at Vallikraavi 14 before moving to its current prominent location.
Building & Architecture: The Leaning House
Since 1988, the museum has been housed in the Leaning House (Kõrvalmaja) at Raekoja plats 18, a distinctive structure built in 1793. The building's unique lean is a result of its construction along the edge of the medieval city wall; the side facing the river rests on the wall's stone foundation, while the opposite side sits on softer ground, causing a visible tilt. Listed in the national register of cultural monuments, the building previously housed a pharmacy from 1879, where the famous Estonian writer Oskar Luts once worked.
