The museum was established in 2003 and formally inaugurated in 2004 after Vasile Grigore donated his large private art collection and his apartment to the public. The collection was declared of public utility on May 25, 2004. Grigore, who lived and worked in the building, spent decades assembling the collection which he intended to share with the public. The museum represents the culmination of his life's work as both an artist and a collector, ensuring his personal legacy and the preservation of Romanian and international art within a single, accessible space.
Building & Architecture
The museum is housed in a stylish Art Deco building located on Str. Maria Rosetti in Sector 2 of Bucharest, easily accessible from the main Gheorghe Magheru boulevard. The exhibition spaces extend over two floors and are connected by an interior staircase. A distinctive feature of the building is an exquisite modern stained-glass window overlooking the stairs, which increases the effect of natural light and adds a unique atmospheric quality to the space. The layout includes five halls that communicate with each other, designed to guide visitors through the various sections of the collection.

The collection comprises over 500 pieces covering almost all fields of fine arts, displayed in five halls representing seven major sections. Key holdings include Romanian interwar paintings, sculpture, and graphics by masters such as Theodor Pallady, Gheorghe Petrașcu, Iosif Iser, and Nicolae Tonitza. Contemporary works by Alexandru Ciucurencu, Corneliu Baba, and Lucian Grigorescu are also featured. The museum holds a significant ethnographic collection of Romanian folk art, including icons on wood and glass, ceramics, and cult objects. Additionally, it houses European, Oriental, and Extrem-Oriental decorative arts, such as Japanese and Chinese porcelain, Delftware, and oriental prayer rugs.
