About Vejle Museums - Vejle Art Museum

Overview

Vejle Art Museum (Vejle Kunstmuseum) is a prominent cultural institution located in the town center of Vejle, southeastern Jutland, Denmark. Established in 1899, it serves as a key repository for Danish art, spanning from classic modernism to pre-COBRA movements, alongside a significant collection of graphic works. The museum is part of the larger Vejlemuseerne organization, which comprises ten museums and attractions across the region. It is recognized for its commitment to making art accessible to the public through exhibitions that often focus on themes of everyday life and human experience.

History & Founding

The museum was founded in 1899 following a donation of art by wealthy citizens who wished to make art accessible to everyone in Vejle. In 1924, the collection moved into its first permanent building, which was donated by Agnes Benteline Hviid. Initially, there were concerns that the museum might not attract enough visitors to remain viable, with a contingency plan to convert the building into apartments for single women; however, the museum proved successful and continued to expand. The institution was re-opened in 2006 after the construction of new exhibition spaces, a project that coincided with the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth.

Building & Architecture

The museum is housed in a complex that integrates historical structures with modern extensions. The original complex includes the former museum building from 1923 and a library from 1934. In 2007, the facility was expanded with a new wing designed by Kim Utzon Architects, known as the Utzon halls, which now host special exhibitions. The museum is located at Flegborg 16-18 in Vejle. The architectural blend of the historic buildings and the contemporary extension by Kim Utzon Architects creates a distinct physical presence in the town center.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The museum's collection comprises more than 16,000 art pieces, with a particular strength in Danish paintings and sculptures from classic modernism up to the pre-COBRA era. It holds the second-largest collection of graphic works in Denmark, a collection that was originally founded in 1899 when Christian Eckard donated his collection of older European graphics and drawings by Danish artists. Notable exhibitions have included works by Rembrandt, showcased during the 400th anniversary of his birth, and the museum frequently features works by local and international artists focusing on themes of life and everyday reality.

Significance & Public Engagement

Vejle Art Museum functions as a dynamic cultural institution that extends beyond a traditional repository of art. It is known for its interactive approach, offering educational programs and experiences designed to be relatable to all visitors, regardless of their art background. The museum actively engages the community through five designated art routes in Vejle Midtby, featuring sculptures and art experiences that can be explored on foot. These routes vary in length and accessibility, including a 2 km wheelchair-accessible yellow route, encouraging visitors to explore the artistic landscape of the city beyond the museum walls.
