Under his leadership, the library launched its website in 1997, becoming the first in Greece to do so. In 1999, the library moved to its current dedicated building, marking a new era of expansion. The institution's modern prominence was cemented in 2010 when it won the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 'Access to Learning' Award, receiving a $1 million prize that funded a comprehensive technological and infrastructural upgrade.
Building & Architecture
The current facility, occupied since 1999, is a purpose-built, ultra-modern complex designed by John Trochopoulos in collaboration with British library expert Michael Dewe and the British Council. The structure spans three floors above ground and includes two basements, with three levels dedicated to public access. The design emphasizes natural light, featuring large windows and vibrant colors, particularly in the study areas. The building houses specialized zones including a colorful children's corner with creative workshops, an intermediate floor for periodicals, and a top floor equipped with a large hall for events and conferences. Papademetrakopoulos. The collection also features the Imathia Scouts archive and a photo and audiovisual archive. The library actively collects local interest materials to enhance regional identity.
