About Veria Central Public Library

Overview

The Veria Central Public Library is a prominent cultural and educational institution located in Veria, a historically rich city in Northern Greece known for its Byzantine heritage. Situated at Ellis 8, the library serves as a dynamic hub for the community, offering a blend of traditional library services and modern technological resources. It functions as a public entity under the Greek Ministry of Education, dedicated to promoting local identity, preserving regional heritage, and fostering lifelong learning for residents of all ages. The library is recognized for its innovative approach, having transformed from a small municipal facility into a leading center for creativity and digital literacy in the region.

History & Founding

The library's origins trace back to 1952, when it began operations in a rented building in a small town in Central Macedonia. For decades, it functioned as a standard reading room and lending library. A significant turning point occurred in 1990 with the appointment of John Trochopoulos as director, who initiated a vision of 'extroversion' and technological integration. Under his leadership, the library launched its website in 1997, becoming the first in Greece to do so. In 1999, the library moved to its current dedicated building, marking a new era of expansion. The institution's modern prominence was cemented in 2010 when it won the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 'Access to Learning' Award, receiving a $1 million prize that funded a comprehensive technological and infrastructural upgrade.

Building & Architecture

The current facility, occupied since 1999, is a purpose-built, ultra-modern complex designed by John Trochopoulos in collaboration with British library expert Michael Dewe and the British Council. The structure spans three floors above ground and includes two basements, with three levels dedicated to public access. The design emphasizes natural light, featuring large windows and vibrant colors, particularly in the study areas. The building houses specialized zones including a colorful children's corner with creative workshops, an intermediate floor for periodicals, and a top floor equipped with a large hall for events and conferences. The facility also features an outdoor reading area with a garden and incorporates sustainable elements such as photovoltaic cells, installed following the 2010 Gates Award funding.

Collection Highlights & Notable Holdings

The library's physical collection comprises over 100,000 items, including books, magazines, DVDs, and CD-ROMs, lending more than 200,000 items annually to its 24,000 registered members. A key component of its holdings is the 'Medusa' digital repository, which preserves and distributes local cultural heritage, including rare materials, objects, artworks, and the Archive of E. Ch. Papademetrakopoulos. The collection also features the Imathia Scouts archive and a photo and audiovisual archive. The library actively collects local interest materials to enhance regional identity. In addition to physical books, the library lends digital devices such as tablets and digital cameras, and provides access to e-books and online resources through its web portal.

Significance & Impact

The Veria Central Public Library is widely regarded as a model for public library innovation in Southern Europe and beyond. Its 2010 Gates Award victory highlighted its success in using technology to serve a community facing economic challenges, with unemployment rates reaching nearly 30% in the region. The library has become a vital social infrastructure, acting as an 'official assistant' for citizens needing to file taxes, apply for unemployment benefits, or access the internet. It has successfully bridged the digital divide, offering free computer literacy workshops and robotic classes for children that supplement state education. The library's bag has become a recognizable symbol in the city, and its annual loan volume of nearly 3 million items in 2015 underscores its role as the 'intellectual food' and heart of Veria.

Services & Programs

The library offers a diverse array of services tailored to various age groups and needs. For children, it provides a dedicated corner with intelligent games, creative construction workshops, and free robotic classes. Adults and students benefit from a 'study space' with ample natural light, an 'inspiration space' with sound-proofed environments for concentration, and access to modern PCs, laptops, and tablets. The facility includes a recording studio for aspiring artists, 3D printers and scanners, and rooms equipped for video conferencing and online lessons. The library also hosts cultural events such as cinema nights, conferences, and exhibitions in its top-floor hall. Services extend to mobile libraries and a branch, ensuring broader access to the community.
