About Virtual Library of Bibliographical Heritage
Identity & Nature
The Virtual Library of Bibliographical Heritage (Biblioteca Virtual del Patrimonio Bibliográfico, or BVPB) is a digital library initiative rather than a physical museum or building. It serves as a cooperative project designed to provide public access to digitized facsimiles of Spain's bibliographic heritage. The platform aggregates materials from memory institutions including archives, libraries, and museums across Spain, offering free consultation of collections that are often kept in special deposits and are otherwise difficult for the general public to access.
Management & Governance
The project is managed by the General Subdirectorate for Library Coordination under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain. It operates as a collaborative effort involving the Ministry, the autonomous regions of Spain, and various other public and private administrations and institutions. This cooperative structure allows for the inclusion of digitized permanent collections from a wide array of sources, including ministries, town councils, athenaeums, foundations, universities, royal academies, and private individuals.
Collection Highlights & Scope
As of August 2017, the BVPB offered free and open access to a significant and growing collection of digitized materials. The holdings included approximately 32,000 old printed books, 3,070 manuscripts, 5,201 cartographic items such as atlases and maps, 85,500 graphic and photographic materials, and more than 600 musical scores. The collection also encompasses historical photographs, manuscripts, and other materials that form part of Spain's historical heritage, with specific featured collections including works by Ramón Llull, 'America pintoresca', and materials related to Cervantes.
Significance & Purpose
The primary significance of the Virtual Library of Bibliographical Heritage lies in its ability to democratize access to Spain's cultural memory. By digitizing rare and fragile items housed in special deposits, the project ensures their preservation while making them available to citizens without the need for physical travel or special clearance. Building & Architecture
As a purely digital library and virtual platform, the Virtual Library of Bibliographical Heritage does not possess a physical building, architectural structure, or dedicated museum space. Consequently, there are no visiting hours, ticket prices, or physical address associated with the entity itself. The 'venue' exists entirely online, accessible via the internet, serving as a virtual repository for the digitized collections of various physical institutions across Spain.
