This quiet painter kept a jar of turpentine on the windowsill and turned it into still lifes—glossy oranges next to chipped mugs, sunlight pooling on the sill like a second subject. She worked in the 1930s when everyone else was shouting with color; her tones stayed hushed, almost monochrome, until you noticed the way light could travel across a tin spoon. Look up Painting (1930) and you’ll see exactly what I mean: five objects, two shadows, and the whole room feels like it’s breathing.
