Bernat Despuig

d. 1451

Bernat Despuig was a Catalan Gothic artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

Bernat Despuig painted religious scenes in the early 1400s, working in the Catalan Gothic tradition. His *Altarpiece of Saint Michael and Saint Peter* (1432) shows gold-backed figures with stiff robes, typical of altar art before the Renaissance. The gold leaf glows behind the saints, and the small gabled panels feel like carved scenes rather than flat paintings. Tap the altarpiece to zoom in on the delicate folds in Saint Peter’s cloak.
